The Volunteer: Sarah Zaleski, 16, has been named the student member of the board of directors of the Anne Arundel County chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat for Humanity is a national organization that builds and renovates homes for economically disadvantaged families that cannot afford housing.
Sarah has been involved with site work in Baltimore. In her new position, she will be working to increase youth participation in Habitat's county endeavors.
Sarah is an honor student at Broadneck High School and will be a junior in the fall. She was president of her sophomore class, participated in the Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils (CRASC) and was active in CRASC's legislative liaison committee.
This summer, Sarah is a lifeguard at the community pool in Bay Hills, where she lives. She and her family are members of the Annapolis Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
In announcing Sarah's appointment to the board, Alice Allor, publicity chairwoman for Anne Arundel Habitat for Humanity, noted, "She brings an enthusiasm and leadership experience that should be very beneficial as Arundel Habitat develops a program for greater youth involvement."
Sarah's plans include college, law school and a run for Congress.
Volunteer's Comments: "I've been involved with Habitat and interested in it since about sixth or seventh grade.
"My mom did a lot of work with Habitat, so that got me interested in it. I've done work in Sandtown in Baltimore for Habitat, but now I'm more involved in Anne Arundel.
"This year, I'd like to be really active with Habitat, getting youth more involved. I think if we tap into the youth energies in Anne Arundel County, that's a real good resource. I would like to maybe work through CRASC to do things in the schools for fund-raisers and have the students adopt a house for renovations.
