The expansion at Gypsy's Cafe was going great guns until the recent heat wave struck. "It was tough hauling railroad ties in the 102-degree heat," says owner Edward Whitely.
Railroad ties? They're part of the landscaping of the Hollins Market eatery's expanded courtyard. When the renovations are finished, Gypsy's will have 30 more seats outdoors, half of them under a wisteria arbor. Look for a separate outdoor menu, with more grilled and steamed items -- perhaps even steamed crabs. The area should be open in another month.
* Citronelle will be closed Sundays and Mondays through Labor Day. The Latham Hotel's chic rooftop restaurant will reopen seven days a week starting Sept. 10.
* Gemelli Desserts in Towson has what may be the best tiramisu around, but in spite of the name, it's also a thriving Italian sandwich shop, with selections made from imported meats and cheeses and breads baked on the premises. Recently, owner Doreen Ercolano opened a European bakery downstairs with an expanded line of authentic Italian pastries, cakes and breads. Stay away if you're worried about your waistline.
* Is lemonade really the hot -- maybe I should say cool -- new drink? Yes, says Restaurants U.S.A., the magazine of the National Restaurant Association. Fresh lemonade is turning up as an "alternative beverage" on menus as varied as Applebee's (the chain) and the five-star Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas. Applebee's Tim Johnson, director of beverage development, believes it's popular because of a couple of factors. "There's a resurgence of interest in fresh products, and in nostalgia," he says.
