Koester masterful after long layoff

He had run a 31-minute 10K in the inaugural Constellation Classic, back when the tall ships breezed into the Inner Harbor and set the scene for Baltimore's premier 10-kilometer road race.

But that was before responsibilities changed for Charlie Koester, forcing him to take a 10-year sabbatical from running.

"Years ago, I had done a lot of running," Koester says, "and then I took a layoff for a while because my sons were at the age where they took a lot of time and I'm one of those runners who won't compete if he can't train properly."

But grandmasters beware: He's back.

"I thought I could do very well at that age group, and so far I have been doing very well," Koester says. "My sons are both teen-agers now and I can get out and run a little bit and they can watch themselves."

Since he turned 50 in February, Koester has run 17:01 in the Baltimore Road Runners Club's 5K Championship at Lake Montebello and 1:18.07 in the Layne Half-Marathon.

He also recorded a 35:13 in the 20th annual Constellation Classic, tops in his age group.

And in the Dundalk Heritage 6K Independence Day Dash, he won the masters division with his 20:38 finish.

"I'm running slower now as compared to the late '70s and early '80s because the recovery factor is not the same," Koester says.

But that has not stopped him from being a competitor in the masters division (40 and over) as well as the grandmasters (50 and over) division.

"Since January, I've run 15 races and won my age group in every one," he says. "The club championships I have to run as a 49-year-old because they use your birthday as Jan. 1."
