Man charged in three motel robberies

A 22-year-old man suspected of being the "Stick Bandit" responsible for three motel robberies was arrested Saturday in an old fruit stand near the site of the robberies, county police said.

Officers canvassing the Whitehall area near Route 50 were told that a man fitting the description of the motel bandit was in the fruit stand at Colbert and Skidmore roads. Police found him asleep inside the shed at 8:50 p.m.

This month, three motels were held up by a man who threatened clerks with a stick, police reported.

On July 4, police said, a man with a stick robbed a Days Inn in the 1500 block of Whitehall Road.

Wednesday, a man asked for a room at the Howard Johnson's motel in the first block of Old Mill Bottom Road. The clerk turned her back for a minute. When she turned around, the man pointed a 2-foot-long stick with a jagged end at her and demanded that she empty the cash register, police said.

Thursday, a man menaced a clerk at the Super 8 Motel in the same block, police said, and escaped with cash.

Shawn Harrison Quick of no fixed address was charged with one count of armed robbery and one of drug possession. He is being held in the Anne Arundel County Detention Center in lieu of $175,000 bail, jail officials said.
