Beethoven is the biggest of all composers, and his music, therefore, is well-suited to the expansiveness of an outdoor setting such as the Baltimore Symphony's outdoor summer home at Oregon Ridge. Today at 7 p.m., the gifted young Chinese-born conductor Lan Shui will lead the BSO in Beethoven's "Coriolan" Overture, Symphony No. 5 and Piano Concerto No. 5 ("Emperor"). The soloist in the "Emperor" Concerto will be Yuliya Gorenman, the young woman who recently took fourth prize in the prestigious Brussels Competition with a blistering performance of Prokofiev's Concerto No. 3. Gorenman currently studies at Peabody with Leon Fleisher, whose own accounts of the "Emperor" were probably the best in the world in the 1950s and early 1960s. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children.
