Man parks in lot, charged with car theft

A man who asked a county police officer if he could park his car in a store lot found himself behind bars Sunday night after a computer check showed the car was stolen from Utah and the man was wanted in Illinois, officials said.

Eastern District Officer Scott Messick was on routine patrol about 9:55 a.m. when a man who said he was traveling from New York to Georgia asked him if he could park and rest in the Wal-Mart store lot in the 7900 block of Crain Highway. The patrolman told him it was allowed as long as he didn't sleep.

Officer Messick asked the man for his license and registration so he could inform the police dispatcher he would be parked in the lot.

A computer check showed that the man had four outstanding warrants in Illinois and that the car was reported stolen by Vicky Ann McCord of South Vernal, Utah. The man was arrested.

William Lee Lewis, 39, of Las Vegas, Nev., was charged with felony theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, police said.
