From a Tenement Window

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The women dry their hair

in the quiet heat

that bubbles tar roofs.

Their hair shines

and their talk is heavy and still.

Lunch waits in ancient dripping ice-boxes

and unmade beds lie open.

In the street

cars leave soft steaming tracks.

And the women watch.
