Car crash kills 15-year-old Russian national

Speed apparently contributed to the death of one Russian national and the serious injury to another when the car they were riding in crashed into a tree off Deer Park Road near Gamber Sunday.

Katya Malahova, 15, was pronounced dead at the site of the accident, and Rimma Malahova, 40, was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she was upgraded from critical to serious condition yesterday. Police were unable to immediately determine the relationship of the two.

State police said the victims were in the rear of a 1989 Nissan Sentra driven by Stella Natarova, 40, of Owings Mills. Ms. Natarova was taken to Carroll County General Hospital, treated and released yesterday.

Officers said her daughter, Rita Natarova, 15, also of Owings Mills was also taken to the same hospital. Her condition could not be determined yesterday evening.

Witnesses told police the Nissan was westbound on Deer Park Road crossing the bridge over Liberty Reservoir at a high rate of speed.

Officers said they were told witnesses heard the screeching of tires just before hearing the crash as the Nissan went off the right side of Deer Park Road, spun 180 degrees and struck a tree with the left side. Katya Malahova was in the left rear seat of the vehicle, police said.

Police said they would confer with the state's attorney's office concerning any charges.

State police contacted the Russian Embassy in Washington to notify the victim's family in Moscow of her death.
