Youth fellowship at church to hold carwash Saturday


The Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) of Nichols Bethel United Methodist Church in Odenton will hold a carwash from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the church parking lot off Route 175 in Odenton.

Proceeds will help send MYF members to their yearly retreat at Camp Harmison near Berkeley Springs, W. Va.

The Maryland Science Center takes over the Provinces branch library at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. today and the Crofton branch library at 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday for "What's the Matter," a chemistry show with fizz, foam, flash, color changes and small-scale explosions.

In addition, Kindermusik, a program of songs and rhythm games designed to help preschoolers gain an appreciation of music, will be held at the Crofton branch.

The next monthly meeting of the West County Child Care Network will be at 7 p.m. July 19 at the home of day care professional Tish Lawson. Call her at (410) 674-4663 for directions.

The child care network meets the third Wednesday of each month to provide both center and family day care providers an opportunity to share ideas, experiences and promote and support one another and quality child care.

There is no fee and meetings are open to all.

The Greater Crofton Chamber of Commerce, the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce and six other area business organizations are sponsoring a "Batter Up Business Mixer" that includes a picnic and a trip to see the Bowie Baysox play the Portland Sea Dogs on July 26.

The mixer will start with dinner at 4:30 p.m. at Rip's Park Place at U.S. 301 and U.S. 50. The Baysox game is scheduled at 7:05 p.m. at the adjacent Prince George's Stadium.

Tickets cost $15 for adults, $10 for children ages 6 to 12 and nothing for children age 5 and younger. They include the cost of the dinner and a general admission ticket for the baseball game.

The O'Mallley Senior Center will sponsor a short talk and display on the "Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)," a Civil War veterans society, from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow.

Among the articles on display will be various National Encampment Medals issued to state representatives, a small collection of Civil War belt buckles and other early images.

The center also is sponsoring a program on drug and alcohol problems from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 25.

Liliana Romero-Allen, an outreach worker with Substance Abuse Community Intervention Services of Anne Arundel County, will discuss the problems senior citizens face in coping with drug addictions or substance abuse by loved ones.
