Free concerts scheduled on Friday nights

I am convinced that no other season of the year is as tradition-filled as summer. Most families have celebrations on Independence Day and Labor Day, and dates for backyard barbecues and picnics in the park often are noted on the family calendar well in advance.

Now the Sykesville Parks and Recreation council is offering another summer family tradition.

The council is sponsoring a series of Friday night concerts in Millard Cooper Park. They are free and will feature a variety of music styles. The public is invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs and refreshments.

Each rain-or-shine performance will begin at 7 p.m. and last about two hours.

On Friday, Terry Gourley will perform classic rock music. Boogie Express is scheduled to bring its own brand of blues, swing and boogie to the park July 21.

Yvonne Bishop will perform classic light rock Aug. 4, and the country sound of Stringband America will be featured Aug. 18.

Millard Cooper Park is just off Route 32 at Cooper Drive and Springfield Avenue in Sykesville. The park has picnic facilities, a playground and restrooms.

St. Stephen's Reformed Episcopal Church has made a tradition of holding a children's carnival during the week of the Vacation Bible school program. This summer's carnival, on the church grounds, offered kids a chance to enjoy some simple games and refreshments.

Members of the church's Junior Sunday school class donated candy and prizes for the event, and were responsible for running the games.

Charging just 10 cents a ticket, the group raised more than $186 at the one-day event. The money will help support a private Christian kindergarten in West Germany.

It's time to dig out that football equipment and start training for the Sykesville Raiders.

Registration for the Raiders' 1995 season is Saturday and July 15, 22 and 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carrolltown Center. The Raiders have several teams to accommodate players ages 6 to 14. The season will be September to November. The cost is $50 per player, with a $10 discount for additional family members.

Cheerleaders for the Sykesville Raiders may register at Carrolltown Center on the same dates and times. The cost is $45, with a $10 discount.

The Freedom Spirit under-12 soccer team is looking for a few good boys. For more information, contact Mike Wilson at 549-3731.

The Spirit will play in the Carroll County Travel League.

Sykesville Baseball is offering a session of fall baseball for ages 6 to 12. The coeducational instructional league will focus on improving skills and will offer a high coach-to-player ratio.

The league will play Saturdays, Sept. 9 through Oct. 28 at the fields on Obrecht Road and at Freedom Park.

Registration will be Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carrolltown Center. The cost is $30 per player, with family discounts available.
