Foster's 3-run HR in 9th lifts Keys, 5-4

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — FREDERICK -- Catcher Jimmy Foster hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning last night, giving the Frederick Keys a 5-4 Carolina League victory over the Prince William Cannons at Grove Stadium.

It was an inspiring hit for a Keys team that has been struggling badly at the plate and ranks last in the Single-A league in virtually every offensive category.

With Cannons left-hander Rich Pratt pitching a strong game, Frederick appeared headed for another punchless defeat. The Keys managed just five singles and one run off Pratt.

But a run against Archie Vazques brought them within two and an infield single by Rolando Avila and a controversial safe call at second base on an attempted force play put two Keys on in the

ninth and set the stage for Foster.

Baysox 17, Mets 9

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Jim Wawruck and T. R. Lewis hit home runs in the third, sparking a seven-run inning that sent Bowie on its way to victory over Binghamton in a Double-A Eastern League game.

Waruck's three-run homer and Lewis' bases-empty shot, plus one by B. J. Waszgis in the ninth, led a 17-hit attack for the Baysox.

Matt Howard, who went 5-for-6 for the Baysox, added a two-run single in the third-inning outburst.

Trailing 10-1, the Mets scored six runs in their half of the third to pull within three, but the Baysox scored four more times in the fourth and twice in the fifth to pull away.

Greg Knowles (3-1) worked 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five.

Binghamton starter Eric Ludwick took the loss, allowing nine runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
