Anne Arundel County park officials have rescheduled games for five softball leagues this summer because two fields at Brooklyn Park II at East 11th Avenue are being moved. A third field, closest to Ritchie Highway, will be open.
"The Board of Education is building a new Park Elementary School, so the fields had to be reconfigured," said Joseph Cannon, director of the Department of Recreation and Parks.
Park Elementary's new site is next to the park, said Ralph A. Luther, director of facilities management.
"We always put some new fields in for every new school we build," said Mr. Luther, noting that the Department of Recreation and Parks frequently shares school athletic facilities.
"We're putting in a basketball court, a multipurpose field that can be used for soccer, lacrosse or football, and some additional parking," Mr. Luther said. "It's all part of site development. If it wasn't there, we'd have to do it anyway."
As part of the project, the park entrance will be moved from 11th Avenue. Brooklyn Park I, with an entrance on 10th Avenue, will remain open through the summer.
Gunman robs store in Brooklyn Park
A gunman robbed a Brooklyn Park High's store Wednesday of an undisclosed amount of cash, county police said yesterday.
The man walked into the store in the 700 block of Church St. about noon and pulled out a small black revolver. He said, "This is a holdup," took money from the cash register and ran from the store, police said.
The robber was a black man about 6 feet tall and of medium build. He had brown eyes, black hair and a scar on his left cheek and is in his late 30s. He was last seen wearing a camouflage jacket and camouflage pants.
