On the field: Pitching against the Orioles for the first time since manager Phil Regan accused him of scuffing the ball, Ricky Bones gave up seven hits and three walks and four runs in 7 2/3 innings and lost. Regan said that when he played, he was accused of scuffing himself by other managers "only about every time I pitched. . . . Some guys can handle it, some guys can't."
In the dugout: Mike Mussina was nearing 120 pitches when Fernando Vina walked with one out in the eighth and the Orioles leading 4-2.
Right-handed reliever Terry Clark, who hasn't been scored upon this season, was throwing in the bullpen, and Regan said he thought about bringing him in to finish the inning. But he stuck with Mussina, who retired Darryl Hamilton and Kevin Seitzer on fly balls to left.
In the clubhouse: "Nice, eh? $3.49." -- First baseman Rafael Palmeiro, holding up the white, buckled thrift shoes bought for pitcher Armando Benitez.
