Fifth-grader places second in essay contest

Jonathan Fitzgerald, a fifth-grade student at Freedom Elementary School, recently placed second in the "Maryland You Are Beautiful" program's Student Literacy Writing Competition.

Jonathan entered an essay on how to eliminate substance abuse and reach the goal of "drug-free schools" by the year 2000 in the third- to fifth-grade category. His essay described how riding a bicycle is better than doing drugs.

As one of 12 statewide winners, Jonathan was recognized by Gov. Parris N. Glendening at an awards ceremony at the State House in Annapolis. Jonathan is the son of Jean and William Fitzgerald.

POLICE

* Finksburg: A resident of Blueberry Lane reported to state police that a garden and tool shed at the rear of her home was broken into Monday and that a grass trimmer, chain saw and hedge trimmer were stolen. The loss was estimated at $436.

FIRE

* Eldersburg: Sykesville responded to a residential fire alarm in the 3300 block of Ross Drive at 4:16 p.m. Tuesday.
