Research refuge to offer activities


The Patuxent Research Refuge will sponsor several activities next month at the North Tract Visitor Contact Station, Bald Eagle Drive, Laurel:

* "Take Refuge," ages 16 and up, will meet from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday. Participants will take a 10-mile bike tour that circles the wildlife loop, stopping to observe the various wildlife management and research strategies used at Patuxent.

* "From Swallows to Swallowtails," ages 16 and up, will meet from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. July 9. Join volunteer naturalist Steve Noyes for a combination bird and butterfly walk. Bring binoculars and field guides.

* "Close Encounters of a Scaly Kind," from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 11. All ages are welcome to a live snake presentation.

* "Night Hike," ages 8 and up, will meet from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. July 15. Participants can look and listen for the nocturnal inhabitants of the refuge.
