On the field: One of the strangest plays of the year occurred in the fourth inning. Orioles catcher Chris Hoiles fouled a ball that clanged off the protective cup of Brewers catcher Joe Oliver. Oliver lay on his back for several minutes, recovering from the blow, but when he finally got up, Brewers trainer John Adam walked directly from home plate to the mound. The guy who was actually hurt on the play was pitcher Angel Miranda, who strained his knee in delivering the pitch that Hoiles fouled. Miranda walked off, to be relieved by Bill Wegman.
In the dugout: Orioles manager Phil Regan started Leo Gomez in place of the injured Jeff Manto. Against tough right-handers, he said he plans to use switch-hitting Bret Barberie at third.
In the clubhouse: "We're starting to get a bit of an air of confidence -- and I kind of like it." -- Regan, after the Orioles' 2-0 victory last night.
