College offers programs for youth


Howard Community College will offer three short summer programs for middle and high school students this summer.

* Jazz and Rock Music Ensemble, for ages 12 to 17, will meet from 9 a.m. to noon July 5 to 14. Participants will perform jazz and rock arrangements with attention given to improvisation and ensembles. The fee is $130.

* Music Composition for Synthesizer and Computer, for ages 12 to 17, will meet from 1 p.m to 4:30 p.m. July 5 to 14. The class will explore synthesizer programming and multitrack sequencing. High school proficiency in music reading is required. The fee is $130.

* Howard County Middle School Band, for ages 10 to 13, will meet from 9 a.m. to noon July 17 to Aug. 4. The fee is $130. The band will perform concert band literature in sectionals and full band rehearsals. Previous band experience is required. A public concert will be performed Aug. 4.

'Male Menopause' discussed by internist

Howard County's Cable 15 will present "Health in the 1990s -- Male Menopause: What Women Need to Know."

An internist at Howard County General Hospital will describe the transition men encounter as they enter the final stage of life. He will discuss the cultural, religious and emotional aspects of midlife changes.

The program also is designed to educate women on how to help men deal with these changes.

The program will air at 8 p.m. tomorrow,Friday, Saturday, Sunday and July 4. Information 313-3320.

War memorabilia sought for display

Howard Community College is seeking World War II memorabilia from the Pacific Theater to borrow for the college's library display during August and September for an observance of the 50th anniversary of the end of the war.

Items sought include medals, uniform accessories, pictures, service patches, documents and newspapers, but not weapons. The items will be displayed in locked cases. Information: Lucy Gardner, 992-4812.
