THE BALTIMORE SUN

This week, Indians designated hitter Eddie Murray probably will become the 20th member of baseball's 3,000-hit club, joining teammate Dave Winfield as the only active players in that fraternity. Other major-leaguers near 3,000, and how likely it is that they'll make contact with the milestone:

Players .......... ....... Comments

Andre Dawson -- DOWN -- Dawson, 40, has 2,715 hits. Closest numerically but has no chance. Is bit player with .195 average.

Wade Boggs -- WHO KNOWS -- Boggs, 37, has 2,436. Must hit .300 to stay in lineup and isn't doing it, especially vs. lefties. But is driven by numbers.

Paul Molitor -- DOWN -- Molitor, 38, has 2,685. Was on pace for 218 hits in '94 before strike; in '95, he's on pace for 113 and may retire.

Cal Ripken -- UP -- Ripken, 34, has 2,284. Key question: Will he reach 3,000 hits before 3,000 games? Could be first sub .280 hitter in club.

Tony Gwynn -- UP -- Gwynn, 35, has 2,268. Hasn't had 200 in season since '89, but never has been below 163. Keen student will adjust as bat slows.

Kirby Puckett -- UP -- Puckett, 34, has 2,191. Has long way to go but the majors' hits leader since '85 hasn't been slowed by Twins' demise.
