The Volunteer: Kenneth Levendoski served the South Baltimore neighborhood near Harbor Hospital Center for 25 years as a Baltimore police officer. Now retired, he's back in the neighborhood as a volunteer at the hospital.

Mr. Levendoski has lived in Glen Burnie for more than 20 years and has been a volunteer at Harbor Hospital Center for about a year. He has logged many hours of service and now spends three to four days a week in the purchasing department.

For him, volunteering at the hospital is a way of returning a favor. He said the staff was "very nice" to him and his late wife as she battled cancer about two years ago.

Ann Heil, who coordinates volunteer assignments at the hospital, called Mr. Levendoski "a star volunteer, devoted to his work."

"He knows a number of his fellow volunteers," she said, "as well as some patients and visitors because of his working in the area so long. [He] already has logged 800 hours for his first year of work, which is very noteworthy. He is just an incredibly giving individual, extremely professional, very gregarious, outgoing and enjoys doing his work well."

Volunteer's comments: "I work directly for the purchasing manager. I mainly answer phones, run errands, do some typing and filing, whatever I can do to help. I like the work I'm doing and the people I'm working with and plan on continuing my volunteer career there.

"The hospital was very nice to my wife while she was there. . . . They helped us out a lot, and I just thought I had to give something back to them."
