Bicyclist, 31, is killed when he is hit by 2 cars

A Churchton man was killed Monday night when he swerved into oncoming traffic while riding a bicycle and was hit by two cars, county police said.

Jeffrey Blunt, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was riding south along the edge of the northbound side of Deale Churchton Road about 10:25 p.m. As he neared the intersection with Franklin Manor Road, he swerved into the northbound lane, apparently to avoid a car making a right turn, police said.

John Everett Revell, 66, of the 6000 block of Melbourne Ave. in Deale, who was driving his 1991 Pontiac Grand Am north on Deale Churchton Road, swerved into the southbound lane to avoid hitting Mr. Blunt. The bicycle struck the fender of the Pontiac, knocking Mr. Blunt onto the road, where he was hit by a 1990 Chevrolet Geo Prism driven by Dawn Marie Hall, 16, of the 1100 block of Cedar Ave. in Shady Side.

Mr. Blunt wore dark clothes, and the bicycle had no reflectors or lights. Poor visibility prevented Mr. Revell and Ms. Hall from seeing Mr. Blunt, who was operating the bicycle unsafely, police said.

Deale man charged with assaulting officer

A Deale man was charged with assault with intent to murder Saturday morning after a Southern District officer's gun was snatched from its holster, county police said yesterday.

Officer William Bertram stopped a 1977 Ford at Columbia Beach and Bay Breeze roads about 4 a.m. He talked briefly to the driver, who had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol, police said.

The man sped off, and Officer Bertram chased him to Shady Side Road and Avalon Boulevard, where the man bolted from the car. Officer Bertram caught him, and the man pulled the patrolman's 9 mm, semiautomatic service pistol from its holster. Officer Bertram regained control of the weapon, subdued the man and searched his car, finding a loaded Colt .45 semiautomatic handgun on the floor next to the driver's seat, police said.

William Anthony Brown Jr., 25, of the 5800 block of Rockhold Creek Road was charged with transporting a handgun, resisting arrest and assault with intent to murder, police said.
