Summer reading program starts this week, with prizes offered

The kickoff for the summer reading program will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Odenton branch library, at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Provinces branch and at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday at the Crofton branch.

The events are open to all children entering kindergarten through sixth grade this fall. There also will be events for preschoolers.

The seven-week program is free. To register, stop by your local library anytime before Aug. 4. When you register, pick up a summer reading starter kit and complete your detective badge to hang in the library. At home, you can keep track of the books you read by writing the titles in your logbook.

Visit the library each week for new books and activities. Keep your logbook and take it back to school in the fall to show your teacher how much you read. Everyone who registers for the summer program will receive a free pass to the Baltimore Zoo while supplies last. Read five, 10 and 20 books and earn coupons for treats at McDonald's, Wendy's, Friendly's and Slurpees at 7-Eleven.

Summer readers can also win free passes to Adventure World, the Anne Arundel County Fair, Apex Cinemas, the Arundel Olympic Swim Center, the Babe Ruth Museum, the Chesapeake TC Children's Museum, the Maryland State Fair, and the Renaissance Festival.
