Mid-Atlantic Country named magazine of year

Mid-Atlantic Country magazine was named Magazine of the Year and received eight other awards recently at the International Regional Magazine Association's annual award ceremony in Stillwater, Okla.

The magazine, owned by ESS Ventures Inc., received the following awards: Gold Award, Best Overall Design; Gold Award, Best Travel Feature; Gold Award, Best Illustrated Feature; Bronze Award, Best Natural History/Environment Feature; Bronze Award, Best Art Direction of a Lead Article; Award of Merit, Best Photo Essay; Award of Merit, Best Art Direction of a Cover; and Award of Merit, Best Department.

ESS Ventures, a media investment and management firm, is owned by Susan Souders Obrecht, former president of Baltimore magazine.

PR society to hold 'Best in Md.' awards

The Maryland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America will hold its 1995 Best in Maryland awards program Tuesday at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel on Charles Street in Baltimore.

The event, which beings at 6 p.m., will include a cocktail hour, dinner and awards presentation. Cost is $45 for members, $55 for nonmembers and $35 for students.

Christine M. Carr named hospital nurse of year

Christine Marie Carr, a clinical nurse in the coronary care unit at Holy Cross Hospital of Silver Spring has been named 1995 Hospital Nurse of the Year by the Maryland Hospital Association.

Ms. Carr has worked at Holy Cross Hospital for 19 years. She initiated a Critical Care Awareness Week last spring and is a founding member of the hospital's clinical advancement program.

Md. bar association elects Gonzalez president

The Maryland State Bar Association has elected a new president, Robert T. Gonzales, general counsel for Regional Management Inc. in Baltimore.

Three other officers were also elected to 12-month terms during the Bar Association's annual conference in Ocean City.

They include: President-elect Judge Barbara Kerr Howe of the Baltimore County Circuit Court; Secretary James L. Thompson of Miller, Miller and Canby in Rockville; and Treasurer Charles M. Preston of Stoner, Preston & Broswell in Westminster.

A graduate of the University of Maryland, Mr. Gonzales earned his law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1976. He most recently served as MSBA's president-elect.

Lurie named chair of bar group committee

Jerald B. Lurie, a business, real estate and tax attorney with Adelberg, Rudow, Dorf, Hendler & Sameth, was appointed chairman of the Fee Arbitration Committee for the Bar Association of Baltimore County for 1995-1996.

Mr. Lurie also serves on the executive council of the city's bar association.

Alfred J. Clark honored at UM

Bethesda native Alfred James Clark is one of 21 alumni to be ZTC inducted into the newly established University of Maryland Alumni Hall of Fame.

Mr. Clark graduated with an engineering degree from Maryland in 1950 and went on to build Clark Construction Group Inc. in Baltimore, which is responsible for more than 400 projects nationwide.

Some of the company's projects include the East Wing of the National Gallery in Washington, Baltimore's Oriole Park at Camden Yards and New York's Lincoln Center.

In 1994, Mr. Clark donated $15 million to the university's engineering school endowment, the largest gift ever made to a Maryland public university.

He is known for his commitment to building housing projects for the homeless and was named "Man of the Year" in 1986 by the D.C. Building Industry Association.
