The volunteer: Frank Plummer, a longtime resident of Severna Park, has been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels since January 1984.
A retired Navy material engineer, he has been an active member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park and the Lions Club since the mid-1950s and is a past president of the Lions Association for Sight and Hearing of Maryland.
Nancy Shores, program administrator of Meals on Wheels for Anne Arundel County, recently nominated Mr. Plummer for the Rotary Club's "Service Above Self Award." She wrote that Mr. Plummer "is responsible for recruiting, training and scheduling a special group of volunteers. This group takes containers of meals out to Lake Shore and Riviera Beach to meet volunteers who will visit individual clients . . . saving those volunteers many -- extra miles."
"On the day when someone can't take their scheduled turn, you will often find Frank filling in," she said. "He also solicits donations from organizations to support those clients who cannot afford the cost of the service.
"I believe he definitely is an example of 'Service Above Self.' "
Volunteer's comment: "When I retired, I looked for something to do and there was a need [at Meals on Wheels].
"Now I'm training volunteers and what not, and I'm a coordinator for a special delivery route."
"The whole thing involves quite a few people, and we can always use more volunteers."
About the organization: Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers nutritious meals to homebound individuals who are unable to shop or prepare meals for themselves.
Delivery volunteers must have a vehicle and a valid Maryland driver's license.
