Summer Reading Club gets strong rainy day start

It was one of those cold, windy, rainy Mondays -- sweat shirt weather in June -- and the first day of summer vacation. Just what was a kid to do?

More than 200 children from Northwest Carroll signed up for the Carroll County Public Library's Summer Reading Club, "Be a Reading Star" on Monday alone, and it was a very busy day for the library. The computerized card catalog was always in use, and you had to stand in line to ask a librarian a question or check out a book.

The incentive to read, besides the gray, windy day, was the promise of prizes for each 10 books a child reads during the summer. The first prizes were grand -- a free pass to the Baltimore Zoo and a half-price admission to Adventure World.

Dottie Wolf, manager of the Taneytown branch, said attendance Monday was perhaps one of the highest turnouts ever. "Everyone was really excited about it. We're really pleased we got off to a good start," she said.

Helen Sparks, children's librarian at the library for seven years, hopes that the library's incentives to read during the summer will mean that children develop a love of reading, a habit of reading every day and will enjoy visiting the library.

"Rainy days are always the best for reading," she says.

Registration for the Summer Reading Club continues throughout the summer and ends Aug. 12. Information: 751-1980.

If you know a budding baseball card collector or a comic book enthusiast, you'll want to take them to Taneytown library next Thursday, June 22, at 2:30 p.m. A representative from Conrad Comics and Cards in Westminster will discuss the history of baseball cards and comic books, plus tips on collecting them, including information about age, values and current trends.

Take questions about your collections.

Registration and information: 751-1980.

Taneytown Parks and Recreation Council sponsors wholesome and fun events throughout the summer months. On Saturday, a fishing derby is planned from 9 a.m. to noon at the Rod and Gun Club. Children under age 13 need to bring an adult and fishing gear.

The council also sponsors Wednesday night events starting at 7:30 p.m. On June 21, children can enjoy sidewalk chalk fun at Taneytown High School Park on Roberts Mill Road, weather permitting. Information: 756-2677.

The Francis Scott Key High School auditorium will be the site of the Patty Neivert School of Dance presentation of "Swan Lake" Friday and Saturday. The program starts at 7 p.m.. Tickets are $6. Proceeds from the program benefit the Carroll County Arts Council.

Information: 857-9476.

If your son looks longingly at the Francis Scott Key baseball field whenever you drive by and imagines playing on it, his wish could come true this summer. Union Bridge Recreation Council, in cooperation with the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks, is sponsoring three one-week sessions of baseball camp for boys entering grades three through nine. Younger boys will attend morning sessions. Boys entering grades six through nine will attend in the afternoons.

Camp directors will include Matt Hitchner, Frostburg State University's pitching and catching instructor, and Jamie Hitchner, an assistant baseball coach at Francis Scott Key.

The program emphasizes the skills and techniques of baseball. The first of three sessions begins Monday. Cost is $50 per camper, with a $5 discount for siblings enrolled.

Information: 857-1923.
