Ban on open burning implemented in Carroll

Beginning this month, the Maryland Department of the Environment has implemented an open-burning ban in Carroll and other Maryland counties through Aug. 31.

The ban applies to open burning of certain waste materials by individuals, farmers and land developers. Barbecue grilling is not affected.

Because high levels of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and toxic compounds are emitted during open burning, the ban is expected to reduce such pollutants by 93.8 tons a day, according to the department. During the ban, the department encourages the use of other methods of disposal, such as mulching and chipping.

Permits for allowed open burning may be obtained from the Carroll County Health Department. Those who obtained a permit for open burning before June 1 will be allowed to use the permit.
