Talbot show house has room at the top

One of the 10 best show-house rooms in America, according to House Beautiful, can be seen on the Eastern Shore.

The River Room at the Beeches, the 1995 decorator show house benefiting the Historical Society of Talbot County, will be featured in the magazine's October issue -- and in a story on the show house in next Sunday's Today section.

Darryl Savage and Anthony Awkard of D.H.S. Designs in Annapolis created this striking garden room.

The house, located between Oxford and Easton on Peachblossom Creek, is open through June 30; call (410) 822-0773.

June in the garden

They don't call them the lazy days of summer for nothing. But there's still plenty of work to be done around your yard and in your garden. Here's the Landscape Contractors Association's to-do list for June:

* Watch for lacebugs on the underside of azalea, rhododendron, pieris and holly leaves. Use an acephate insecticide according to manufacturer's instructions.

* Hedges may need to be clipped. Remember to trim so that the base is slightly broader than the top.

* Rhododendron seed pods need to be removed. Pinch off by hand.

* Climbing roses should be pruned after blooming. Do this by removing entire old canes.

* Control pine bark aphids by spraying an acephate insecticide according to manufacturer's recommendations.

* Watch for azalea leaf and petal gall. The best control is to pick off by hand and destroy.

* It's still a great time for putting in new plantings.

New furniture style

Ethan Allen has just finished renovating its store in Towson to reflect the furniture manufacturer's new image. Long known for its middle-America traditional and Colonial furnishings, the company has introduced several new lines that are more in tune with what today's buyers want: casual, comfortable, eclectic furniture.

The newest introductions include Country Colors, rural American furniture that's been streamlined and updated, and the Radius Collection, inspired by 1940s industrial designs. Not the Ethan Allen you thought you knew, is it?
