Bette C. Hernandez, a Baltimore native and former medicasecretary at Johns Hopkins Hospital, died Tuesday of a brain tumor at a nursing home in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was 55.

Mrs. Hernandez, who had lived in Atlanta since 1987, had joined her mother, Hazel V. Cammarata, in Myrtle Beach about seven months ago.

The former Bette Cammarata was a graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame and earned an associate's degree at Villa Julie College. She moved to Miami after her marriage in 1967 to Celestino Antonio Hernandez, who resides there.

She had been a medical secretary in Miami and Atlanta, and had held other jobs, including office manager and librarian.

Other survivors include a son, Robert Alan Hernandez; and a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Hernandez, both of Chicago; and a sister, Diane Chiat of Baltimore.
