County has detailed chain of command

Do you know how our county government is set up? We have had a home rule charter since 1965. At the top of the chain of command are the voters. We choose the county executive, who serves a four-year term, and the seven members of the County Council, which oversees the county auditor and the Board of Appeals.

Directly beneath the executive are the offices of aging, utilities, law, police, public works, planning and zoning, fire, zoning appeals, inspections and permits, and recreation and parks.

Also under the executive's auspices are the community college, Board of Education, libraries, health and social services.

The director of administration, who heads offices of finance, budget, personnel, central services, detention facilities, emergency management and criminal justice, serves as acting commissioner when needed.

Thanks to the Greater Severna Park Council for this civics lesson.

The county Department of Health is waging a campaign to save our young people from tobacco.

A free tobacco sales compliance kit is available to help merchants comply with changes in state laws regulating tobacco sales to minors.

A free Quit Kit is designed for teens who want to stop smoking. There is also a brochure for adults called "Protect Our Kids. Don't Let Them Get Hooked on Tobacco!"

To obtain any of these packets, call the department's Learn to Live Line at (410) 222-7979.
