1995 All-Howard County Track and Field Teams

THE BALTIMORE SUN

BOYS FIRST TEAM AT A GLANCE

PERFORMER OF THE YEAR

* Greg Curtis, Oakland Mills, Sr. -- Curtis wrapped up a stellar high school career by winning county, region and state championships in the 1,600 (season best 4 minutes, 23.6 seconds), region and state titles in the 3,200 (9:41.2) and county and region crowns in the 800 (1:58.2). He ran away with gold in nine postseason races, also taking second in the state 800 and running a leg on the fifth-place 800 relay team to lead the Scorpions to a one-point win over Atholton for their third straight Class 2A title. He has been a member of eight state championship teams during his 12 seasons and holds a 3.71 grade-point average. Curtis will attend Brown University.

CO-COACH OF THE YEAR

* Sam Singleton, Oakland Mills -- Oakland Mills captured its third straight Class 2A state title, shocking favored Atholton by one point last month at Western Maryland College. Though he has six on the All-County squad, Singleton credited some of the less heralded members of his team with scoring the key points that put his squad over the top. "I thought our chance was slim," Singleton said, "but a lot of people really stepped up and helped us."

CO-COACH OF THE YEAR

* Pat Saunderson, Atholton -- Atholton had defeated Oakland Mills in two of three meetings this spring after capturing the state indoor crown last winter. Saunderson said this year's team was the deepest he's ever coached, and credits that to an aggressive staff that first pushed students to come out for track, then helped them reach their potential. The Raiders won county and region titles.

PERFORMER PROFILES

* Ed Chang, Atholton, Sr. -- Chang won the state 2A long jump (22-4 3/4 ) and took second in the 400 (50.1). He has run a 200 split in 2:00.5. He won seven gold medals and five silvers to help lead the Raiders to county and region titles.

* Max Clifford, Atholton, Jr. -- Clifford ran to eight gold medals at the county, region and state meets, doing the bulk of his damage in relays. His top splits were nothing short of impressive, including 21.2 seconds in his leg of the 4 x 200. He also finished sixth in the state 200.

* Leonard Frieson, Mount Hebron, Sr. -- Frieson consistently was the best long jumper in the county. He won the county title with a leap of 21-3, before taking sixth at the Class 3A state championships.

* Faisal Hasan, Wilde Lake, Jr. -- Hasan won Class 1A state titles in the 1,600 (4:23.9) and 3,200 (9:45.8). He won a total of eight medals at the county, region and state meets, including five golds.

* Anthony Howard, Oakland Mills, Sr. -- Howard won the county and Class 2A state championships in the high jump, winning the latter by clearing a season-best 6-4. He had a 3.4 GPA.

* Brian Howard, Oakland Mills, Jr. -- After setting the county shot put record (55-1), Howard took second in the county meet, first in the regionals and second in the state Class 2A championships. There, he also ran a leg on the second-place relay team. He finished the year with a 3.89 GPA.

* Jared Howard, Atholton, Jr. -- Howard collected 11 gold medals in the postseason, including three at the Class 2A state championships. Though he did the bulk of his damage on the relay teams, he won the county 400 title (49.8) before taking sixth in the state.

* Ryan Hughes, Oakland Mills, Sr. -- Hughes won the county title in the discus (138-4), took second in the regionals and sixth at the Class 2A state meet. He also held a 3.6 grade-point average.

* Ben Rohde, Atholton, Sr. -- A key member of Atholton's county and region championship team, Rohde participated on the 400 and 800 relay squads that each took gold at the state meet. He also finished fifth in the 1,600, running a season-best 4:34.4.

* Kevin Rondon, Oakland Mills, Jr. -- Rondon won a county title in the shot put (52- 1/2 ), took second in the regionals and won a bronze at the state meet. He and teammate Brian Howard made up the best shot putting tandem in the state.

* Chris Selmer, Glenelg, Soph. -- After medaling in both the county and regional 800, Selmer won the Class 2A state title in 1:57.16. He also participated on the Gladiators' 800 relay team, which finished fourth in the state.

* Zach Tropf, Atholton, Jr. -- Tropf was second to Curtis in the state 1,600 and 3,200, running season-best times (4:25.3 and 9:43.1, respectively). He won six medals (five silvers) in the postseason.

* Pat Tvarkunas, Glenelg, Jr. -- He set a county record in the pole vault (14-6) en route to winning the county title, then won gold medals at the regional and state meets.

* Kyle Walker, Oakland Mills, Jr. -- Walker won two titles in both the county and regional meets before taking a gold in the 110 hurdles (14.52), a silver in the 300 hurdles (40.35) and bronze in the 100 -- (11.33) at the state meet. He also ran a leg on the 100 relay team that took second at the states.
