1995 All-Baltimore City/County Girls Track and Field

THE BALTIMORE SUN

THE FIRST TEAM AT A GLANCE

CO-COACH OF THE YEAR

* Marilyn Bevans, Perry Hall -- Not only did Bevans guide the Gators to their second straight Baltimore County crown over rival Dulaney, but she helped Perry Hall to dethrone Western for the regional crown and to a fourth-place finish in the state meet.

Bevans, whose primary task is to mentor runners from the 400 -- and up, is quick to disperse credit.

"All we do, whether the kids are male or female, is coach track. It's a good system. Jerry Martin does the sprinters and jumpers ** and John Gregory works with the throwers," said Bevans. "We were very pleased at the states. There were a lot of our people running personal bests."

As coach of the distance runners, Bevans is responsible for the Gators' best athlete, Krissy Jost, who had her best year ever in breaking six school records and one county record.

And it is under Bevans' tutelage that hurdlers such as junior Joanna Helm and sophomore Aubrey Redmon became state qualifiers and part of a solid foundation for next season.

CO-COACH OF THE YEAR

* Doris Nash, Northern -- Nash's 12-member squad turned in a stellar season for its retiring coach, going undefeated in the City 3A League and placing second in the city to Western for the second straight year.

April Allen, the Vikings' only senior, had regional title-winning efforts in the shot put and discus to

pace the Vikings to a third-place effort in the regions. Northern was 10th in the 3A state meet, getting a third-place finish out of Nash's 400 relay squad.

"Doris is really in it for the kids," said Mervo coach Freddie Hendricks. "You can just see her influence in the girls. They scratch for everything they can get."

Though a solid foundation returns next year, Nash is retiring after 30 years of coaching.

PERFORMER OF THE YEAR

* Krissy Jost, Perry Hall, senior -- Jost, headed for Villanova, had her best year ever as she had a part in the breaking of six school records and three county records.

In finishing ahead of longtime rival Kristin Nicolini (Annapolis) in the 1,500 in 4 minutes, 34.66 seconds -- good for third place at the Penn Relays -- Jost broke Amanda White's (Dulaney) county record.

Jost was a county and regional champ in the 800 and finished third in the 4A states.

In both the 1,600 and 3,200, Jost was a county and regional

champ and a state runner-up to Nicolini in each.

Jost's third-place finish in the 800 (2:14.73) at 4A states was a county record, and her state runner-up effort (4:53.5) in the 1,600 was also a county record.

Jost also set school records in the 3,200 (10:33.5) in finishing second at the state meet.

PLAYER PROFILES

* April Allen, Northern, senior -- At the city championships, Allen

won the discus in 87-6 1/2 , was a runner-up to Carver's Daneka Cornish in the shot put and ran the third leg of the Vikings' runner-up 800 relay squad.

In the regions, Allen rebounded to beat Cornish in the shot put with a toss of 34-2 1/2 and also captured the discus crown.

Allen, the squad's only senior, was heavily relied upon for her leadership.

* Treesa Boyce, Woodlawn, senior -- Boyce was first in the county 200 in 24.9, as well as in the region in 25.5. Boyce also was a county champion in the 400 (58.4) and a regional runner-up to Western's Tamara Laing.

* Christina Chillemi, Dulaney, senior -- As perhaps the best all-around jumper in the city-county area, Chillemi was first in the county and region in the high jump, and was third in the 4A state meet. Her best effort came in the regions, where she cleared 5-2.

Chillemi won the county and regional crowns in the triple jump, with her personal best being 35-3 at the county, as well as a long jump county and regional runner-up with a personal best of 16-9 1/2 .

* Tamara Clarke, Western, senior -- At the city championships, Clarke won the 800 in 2:20.0, was a runner-up in the 400 in 58.5, and anchored the Doves' winning 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams.

She was also a member of the regional champion 3,200 relay squad and the regional runner-up 1,600 relay contingent.

Clarke, whose personal best in the 800 was a 2:15, placed second in that event in the regions and fourth in the 4A state meet.

* Daneka Cornish, Carver, junior -- Cornish surprised Allen by winning the city shot put title in 33-3, and was third in both the regions and 3A states in that event. She was also a regional runner-up in the 800.

And with several competitors graduating, this underclassman could be one to watch next season.

* Sheraie Darby, Woodlawn, senior -- Darby, perhaps the area's best female hurdler during her career, regained the 300 hurdles title she won as a sophomore.

She was first in the county (45.4) and region (44.5) and clocked a personal-best 43.95 at the 4A state meet. She also won county and regional crowns in the 100 hurdles and was fourth in the states.

Her personal-best in the 100 was 14.8. As a junior in the 300, Darby was first in the county and third in the region and ran an area-best 44.77 in the 4A states for a runner-up effort.

As a sophomore, Darby blazed to the county (46.8), regional (45.3) and 4A state titles in the 300 hurdles and ran the first leg of the Warriors' state runner-up 1,600 relay team.

* Lori Havrilla, Catonsville, senior -- Havrilla was the city-county 11 area's most dominant discus competitor, winning the county (96-11) and regional (103-9) titles and being a 2A state runner-up.

Havrilla, whose personal-best in the discus was 108-11, also placed second in the county shot put to teammate Tia Douglass before coming back to beat Douglass for the regional title in 32-9 1/2 .

* Tamara Laing, Western, senior -- Laing overcame a leg injury to win the 100 (12.5), 200 (24.6) and 400 (57.3) at the city championships. Laing's clocking in the 400 was a Baltimore City meet record.

She also was a regional champ in the 400 in 58.1 and a regional runner-up in the 100 in 12.34. Laing's time of 57.41 in the 400 was good for fourth in the 4A state meet.

* Alisha McClinton, Perry Hall, sophomore -- McClinton has potential to burn. In the long jump, where her personal-best is 17-10 3/4 , McClinton was a county and regional champ and a 4A state runner-up.

In the 100, where her PR is 12.3, she was first in both the county and regions. And in the 200, McClinton was third in the county and second in the region.

* Janee Ward, Western, senior -- Ward was the city-county area's

premier triple jumper. She jumped 37 feet to win the city crown and 35-2 for the regional title.

She was also a state runner-up in 36-11. Ward anchored the city championship 800 relay team to a meet record of 1:46.7. That 800 team also was a runner-up in the region.
