Oakloom Clothing Inc., a South Baltimore maker of suits, sport coats and trousers sold in men's specialty stores across the country, announced yesterday that it has been bought by
Frederick-based Hartz & Co.
Terms were not disclosed.
Malcolm Katzen, who will keep his position as president of Oakloom, said the sale will enable his company to establish a higher profile in the menswear trade.
"Oakloom was not a much-known name," he said. "We did not advertise. With the strength of Hartz & Co.'s marketing, advertising and sales force, we look forward to becoming a recognized high-quality brand name."
Oakloom, with annual sales of about $6 million, sells 35,000 units of clothing each year to stores such as Paul Stuart in New York, Bullock & Jones in San Francisco, Larrimore's in Pittsburgh and Maus & Hoffman in Palm Beach, Fla.
Al Cohen, Hartz & Co.'s president and chief executive, said the purchase was made with an eye to "the upper end of the better market."
0 "We are solidly established in specialty stores in the $500-to- $700 price range; with the acquisition of Oakloom we gain entree to the $700- to $1,000-suit customer," he said.
Mr. Cohen said that Oakloom's management and production work force will remain in Baltimore but that administration, sales and technology will be "updated and upgraded." Hartz & Co. also has offices in New York.
