Talbots Kids clothing store in The Mall in Columbia will sponsor a summer safety event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The program will focus on protecting skin from sun and poison ivy; summertime first aid; and bicycle safety tips from Ellen Groner, a pediatric medical assistant, Trooper Abels of the Maryland State Police and Michelle Wright of the Department of Recreation and Parks.
Participants may register all day to win a summer cycling outfit from Talbots Kids.
Activities being offered during school closings
The Columbia Association Before and After School Care will offer activities for elementary school students on the days of early school closings, Friday, Monday and June 13, and on the days when there is no school, June 14-16.
* The program for students on the days of early school closings, Friday and Monday, when students are dismissed two hours early and June 13, when students are dismissed three hours early, are available to students attending Atholton, Centennial, Clemens Crossing, Guilford, Hammond, Jeffers Hill, Longfellow, Northfield, Phelps Luck, Running Brook, Swansfield, Talbott Springs, Waterloo and Worthington Elementary schools.
The fee is $6 per day.
Each school will offer activities for the week selected from these categories: mime, clown, balloon artist, "Scales and Tales," movie, magician, "Outrageous Olympics," space, "Fun Bus," puppet show and "Lore of the Land."
* The "School's Closed" programs, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 14-16, will be available to students attending these elementary schools: Atholton, Bryant Woods, Centennial Lane, Clarksville, Clemens Crossing, Dasher Green, Guilford, Hammond, Jeffers Hill, Longfellow, Northfield, Phelps Luck, Running Brook, Stevens Forest, Swansfield, Talbott Springs, Thunder Hill, Waterloo and Worthington.
Activities will include a trip to the National Zoo in Washington or a "Beach Blast" on June 14; a carnival and "Outrageous Olympics" on June 15 at the school; and roller-skating at the Supreme Sports Club at 7080 Deepage Drive or a moon bounce at the school June 16.
The registration deadline for "School's Closed" program is tomorrow. Forms are available at school cafeterias. The fee is $25 per day.
* Wilde Lake: 10300 block of Twin Rivers Road: Police charged a 15-year-old Columbia girl with assault about 1 a.m. Saturday after she grabbed the necklace of a 34-year-old woman who asked a group of youths to be quiet, police said.
