25 Years Ago (Week of May 24-30, 1970)

* A reduction of $679,758 in the Board of Education's $15.1 million operating budget drew strong criticism from the Howard County Teachers Association. HCTA president Carl Doerr expressed the opinion that "fiscal authorities in an election year are using teachers' salaries to maintain the tax rate."

50 Years Ago (Week of May 27-June 2, 1945):

* Nine hundred inmates at the Maryland House of Correction in Jessup rioted during their evening meal because they objected to the meager amount of meat in their stew. Seventeen men required hospitalization after the incident, including a guard who had been stabbed in the back.

* The chairman of the Howard County Clothing Drive reported that county residents had donated 14,500 pounds of clothing. Volunteers spent more than 500 hours sorting and packing the donations. The clothing was to be sent to the needy in war-ravaged Europe.
