Terps still in hunt for QB Ornstein

Gus Ornstein, a quarterback who spent last season at Notre Dame, said yesterday that Maryland remains among the colleges he is interested in transferring to.

Ornstein, who received his release from Notre Dame last month, has made official recruiting visits to Michigan State and LSU. Besides Maryland, he is also talking to Alabama, Kansas State, Louisville, Kentucky, Ohio State and San Diego State. Ornstein said that of the nine schools, Maryland is the only one which has yet to offer him a scholarship.

Ornstein is a 6-foot-5, 220-pound freshman from Tenafly, N.J., who has three years of eligibility remaining. Mop-up action against Navy last season cost him a year of eligibility.

Ornstein said he didn't want to spend the next three years playing behind Ron Powlus, who was a rookie starter for the Fighting Irish last fall.
