The evolution of Flutie Garcia's, and the discovery of Phyllis'

In January it was named Barriga (stomach). By April it had become Rosita's Cantina. Unfortunately, the owners found that the new name was copyrighted by the Lone Star Grill. So now Towson's soon-to-be-opened Southwestern restaurant at 418 York Road will be called -- ta-ta! -- Flutie Garcia's. Stay tuned for further changes; that still isn't the catchiest name I've ever heard.

* I didn't think there were many restaurants around I didn't know about, but Phyllis' Caribbean-American Cuisine has been open for two years, and I had never heard of it. Located at 2101 N. Charles St. (you have to enter on 21st Street), Phyllis' serves a full range of Caribbean dishes, including curried goat, oxtail, shark Caribbean style, callaloo (stewed greens), goose and Trinidad fruitcake for dessert.

* You may have seen ads for a new restaurant, Tradewinds, in local papers and wondered about it. Turns out Tradewinds is in the newly remodeled Best Western Travel Plaza at O'Donnell and Boston Streets. In spite of the name, it offers basically American fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

* If you're heading for Bethany Beach, Del., this summer, keep the newly opened Wild Orchid in mind. It offers what owner Trish Green calls "inventive American cooking," including hand-cut steaks, fresh local seafood and homemade desserts made daily. Entrees run from $13.95 to $23.95.
