All-County Girls Lacrosse Team

THE BALTIMORE SUN

COACH OF THE YEAR

* Pam Reich, Joppatowne -- The Mariners lost six senior starters from last year's 9-3 team, but four-year starters Lisa Maly on defense and Karen Lemley in goal provided a solid foundation for this season. "They provided leadership and poise, and made the others aspire to their level," Reich said. "It was a case of figuring out who could play best where and fielding the right mix of players." Joppatowne finished 10-4, losing the Class 1A-2A regional final to Fallston for the second straight year.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

* Jenny Weber, Fallston, senior, midfielder -- A dominating player in the middle for a second straight year, she was the main ingredient in the Cougars' march to a county title and a 13-0 record before losing to unbeaten (and eventual champion) Loch Raven in the state semifinals. She finished with a team-high 50 goals and was one of three on her team with between 95-100 ground balls. A four-year regular, a repeat first-team choice, and the girls Al Cesky Award winner, she is going to William & Mary on a lacrosse scholarship.

FIRST TEAM AT A GLANCE

* Jackie Bangert, C.M. Wright, senior, defense -- A repeat selection, she was the heart of the Mustangs' defense for the second straight year. Additionally, she retained her position as

the team leader in ground balls with 108, and scored one goal and added two assists.

* Krissy Battenfeld, C.M. Wright, senior, attack -- A three-year regular and a repeat choice, she scored 27 goals and had 26 assists.

* Courtney Benner, Fallston, junior, defense -- Primarily a defensive standout, she was one in the 95-100 range for ground balls and worked out of the back enough to collect 13 goals and 11 assists.

* Tiffany Gehring, Joppatowne, junior, attack -- She led her regional playoff team in scoring with 50 goals and 12 assists.

* Becky Gerhart, C.M. Wright, junior, midfield -- A three-year starter and a repeat selection, she was one of several speedsters who picked up her scoring from a year ago, as the Class 3A-4A finalists were much more offense-minded this season. She won a second straight county goal-scoring title with 71, up from 42, to go with 13 assists. In the two state tournament games, she had nine goals.

* Miranda James, C.M. Wright, junior, midfield -- A former county sprint star who began playing lacrosse a year ago (a second-team pick), she combines speed, athleticism and skill. She was second in the team in scoring with 35 goals and 11 assists. She had six goals in the state playoffs (she and Gerhart combined for 15 of the team's 17 goals in the two state tournament games).

* Lisa Maly, Joppatowne, senior, defense -- A repeat choice, not only was she the Mariners' top defender, but led the county in ground balls with 191 and also scored 18 goals.

* Annie Sappington, C.M. Wright, junior, midfield -- Another speedster in the middle, this repeat selection increased her ground balls/interceptions total from 59 to 80, although her scoring total dropped from 35 goals to 23. This season, however, she was called upon for other field responsibilities.

* Rachel Simon, Fallston, junior, midfield -- She is one of only two (with James), to graduate from last year's second team. The third of the Cougars in the 95-100 ground ball department, she was an aggressive defense wing, another important part of a midfield group, all of whom were underclassmen but one.

* Kathleen Turk, Fallston, senior, attack -- Another repeat choice, she was the team's second-leading scorer with 33 goals and 14 assists. A year ago, her 32 goals led the team.

* Britney Whitehurst, John Carroll, sophomore, midfield -- A first-year player for the Patriots after transferring from Fallston, she had 26 goals and seven assists, and was selected for the AIS all-star team.

* Karen Zimmerman, Bel Air, senior, goalkeeper -- She finished with 191 saves, and only Howard and Centennial scored more than 10 goals against her. For the year, she averaged 15 saves a game and had a save percentage of 65.
