Area players picked for national lacrosse event


Four teams of local girls lacrosse players have been selected to compete for a national schoolgirl championship at the United States Women's Lacrosse Association tournament Memorial Day weekend in Marlton, N.J.

The South region, which also includes Washington and northern Virginia, will send three teams. Chesapeake, which includes Anne Arundel County and some of Howard, will send one team.

Last year, the South I team finished third in the field of 16 teams after falling to eventual champ Pennsylvania I, 6-4, in the semifinal and beating Empire State, 7-5, in the consolation game. Chesapeake did not reach the semifinals, finishing 3-2 in the preliminaries.

This year's South I team includes Lizzy Bennett, Ridgley Bennett and Melissa Coyne, Roland Park; Tice Burke, St. Paul's; Summer Downing and Claire Mikolayunas, Friends; Anne Heine, Loch Raven; Emily Hickman, Bryn Mawr; Katie Loovis, Seton Keough; and Jacque Weitzel, Garrison Forest. Roland Park's Wendy Kridel will be one of two coaches.

On South II are Kim Allen, Loch Raven; Amy Fronkoski, Seton Keough; Jen Maser and Marissa Perman, Dulaney; Amie Rose, Liberty; Simone Stalling, Friends; Sheehan Stanwick, Notre Dame Prep; and Nicole Wittelsberger, McDonogh. St. Paul's Sandy Hoody is among the coaches.

Named to South III are Kerry Adams and Nicki Jones, Liberty; Jenny Gray, Maryvale; Angie Hill, Oakland Mills; Meghann Mohler, Catonsville; Betsy Mueller, Dawn Will and Nicole Zimmerman, Dulaney; Gia Trionfo, Loch Raven; Meredith Shuey, Roland Park; and Kate Venanzi, Towson. Liberty's Courtney Vaughn will coach.

Selected to the Chesapeake team are Kate Bjork, Amy Brew and Stephy Samaras, Annapolis; Shannon Chaney, Ani Mason and Jennie Voishan, Severna Park; Lynette Chastant, Erin McGinnis, Julie Kickham and Dani Vissers, Mount Hebron; Jen Corradini and Tara Foran, St. Mary's; Michelle Dillow and Lisa Martin, North County; Kate Graw and Joyce Wu, Severn; and Megan Riley and Jess Marion, South River. Amy Nye, South River and Jen Manning, St. Mary's, are alternates.

Chesapeake will be coached by Sue Chittam of Quick Stix Travelers, along with assistants Cathy Samaras and Joanne Brew.
