Columbia CC defeats Hobbit's Glen for title

It seemed appropriate that Perky Cullinane, who has played on every Columbia Country Club side since 1950, would have a part in earning the clinching points, as Columbia won the 69th annual team match championship of the Maryland State Golf Association yesterday.

The Chevy Chase club defeated Hobbit's Glen Golf Club, 10 1/2 -7 1/2 . The Baltimore division club, which won the title last year when it was placed in the Washington half of the draw, thus missed a chance to be the only team to win successive titles representing a different geographical division each time.

Cullinane, 60, who recalled his first partner in these matches was Deane Beman, teamed with Ken Foster at home to defeat Doug Wilson-Bruce Shaver, 2 1/2 - 1/2 , finishing on the 18th green before an appreciative gallery of club members.

Actually, club professional emeritus Bill Strausbaugh, who has been involved with these matches even longer than Cullinane, provided a challenge to the Columbia team.

Strausbaugh said he told the team to close the gap. "I knew the Country Club of Maryland had won 10 times, Congressional nine and Columbia six. By winning, we get that much closer to Congressional."

Foster rolled in a 35-foot putt at the ninth green to give his team a 1-up lead (and a point), then added a critical curling 20-foot putt at the 10th for par (against a three-putt). Wilson, who had hit it a foot at the 200-yard fourth for birdie, made the other birdie of the match at No. 12, and the teams halved the remaining holes.

Marty West III-John Myers Jr. gave Columbia a 3-0 start at home, but Phil Fairbanks-Fran Lynch of Hobbit's Glen won 2 1/2 points, as Fairbanks contributed three birdies, including one at No. 8 that clinched the front-nine point. At Hobbit's Glen, professional Gene Ward had the shot of the day at No. 7, as he struck a 9-iron shot from 125 yards that rolled into the cup for an eagle-3. He and amateur Adrian Druzgala went on to defeat Bob Dolan-Geoff Robertson, 2-1.

Dan Tate birdied the last two holes, and he and Henri deLozier earned two points from Wayne Wright-Bill Carter. The last pairing -- Jim Bennett-Paul Holbrook, Hobbit's, vs. Richard Holland-Dan Derisio -- split, 1 1/2 -1 1/2 , each side winning two holes with the other 14 halved.
