3 traditional tournaments highlight week's calendar

Three traditional tournaments headline this week's area calendar, each from a different organization.

The Middle Atlantic PGA's Rolling Road Golf Club pro-am, an annual fixture and one of the longest-running of such events in the section, has drawn a full field for tomorrow.

Rolling Road GC also will be the site of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association's Senior four-ball championship Thursday, with 26 teams in the field.

Another two-man team event will be Friday, when the Maryland State Golf Association holds its 21st annual championship at Piney Branch Golf Club. The Caves Valley Golf Club pairing of Henry Blue and Joel Kaye will be the defending champions in a 90-team field.

Kemper Open

Three of the current top 10 money winners on the PGA Tour are early entries for the record $1.4 million event due June 8-11 at TPC-Avenel in Potomac.

Among those announced are Davis Love III, winner at New Orleans, and runner-up in the Masters; Lee Janzen, The Players Championship winner, and Corey Pavin, winner at Los Angeles, to be joined by Payne Stewart, and a foreign contingent that includes Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Price and Jose Maria Olazabal.

Discount tickets are available in advance from any Woodward & Lothrop store, or from Ticketmaster -- in Baltimore, (410) 481-7328.

WGA team matches

First-round play in the annual program will begin Friday, with ++ Hunt Valley GC vs. Elkridge Club, Green Spring Valley Hunt Club vs. CC of Maryland, Baltimore CC vs. Eagle's Nest, and Turf Valley CC vs. Hobbit's Glen GC.

Long Driving championship

The old national event, which ran for 19 years, has been revamped as an amateur team competition, beginning at the club level. Individual clubs will conduct a championship to determine a winner in four categories -- Men Division I (18-34), Men Division II (35-49), Men Division III (50-over) and Women (18-over).

Local club winners will advance to a state competition in the summer, and each state winner will move on to one of 15 regional events. The 15 regional winners qualify for the national finals to be held Oct. 5-8 in Tucson, Ariz. Professionals may enter their clubs by calling (800) 438-0489.
