SBA honors members of NAWBO -- BRC
The National Association of Women Business Owners -- Baltimore Regional Chapter (NAWBO -- BRC) announced that Marylin Dyer Blair, chapter president, has been selected as the William E. Kidd Jr. Small Business Training Advocate of the Year for Maryland.
The honor, bestowed by the Small Business Administration, is given to individuals who contribute time and resources to help train employees of small businesses.
Ms. Blair was selected for her supervisory and management skills, career building and crisis intervention abilities and knowledge of career development.
Other chapter members receiving awards from the Small Business Administration include: Mary Lynn Shanholtz, president of Shanholtz Professional Corp., runner-up as Accountant of the Year; and Malynda Madzel, president of the Maryland Consulting Group, runner-up as Women in Business, Advocate of the Year.
They will be honored at the 11th annual SBA Awards Breakfast May 19 at the Omni Inner Harbor Hotel.
The NAWBO -- BRC, based in Westminster, is a professional organization with more than 100 members that works to strengthen the earnings, visibility and growth potential of women business owners.
Fusion Systems Corp. names 2 executives
Fusion Systems Corp. has appointed Joseph F. Greeves and Steven F. Hodlin to its senior management team. Mr. Greeves was named chief financial officer and vice president of administration and finance; Mr. Hodlin will be director of quality.
For the past eight years, Mr. Greeves was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ogden Environmental and Energy Services, a division of the Ogden Corp. Mr. Greeves is a certified public accountant and has worked for Touche Ross. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland.
Mr. Hodlin has about 10 years' experience in quality management, including a number of awards in the field. For the last two years, he served as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Examiner. He was vice president of quality at Penril Datability Networks in Rockville, where he was responsible for design/reliability assurance, internal auditing and assessment and manufacturing quality assurance. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts and an MBA from Babson College.
Fusion Systems Corp., based in Rockville with offices in Europe, Japan and Korea, makes products that assist in the manufacture of semiconductors and other products.
T. Talbott Bond buys Hagerstown company
T. Talbott Bond Co., a regional Canon office equipment dealer, announced the acquisition of Antietam Business Equipment in Hagerstown. The company declined to disclose the purchase price or terms of the acquisition.
Established in 1955 and headquartered in Baltimore, T. Talbott Bond is a subsidiary of Alco Standard Corp., with annual revenues of $36 million.
Sinai Hospital names Suldan general counsel
Joel Suldan has joined Sinai Hospital of Baltimore as vice president and general counsel.
Mr. Suldan was previously a partner with McDermott, Will & Emery, a Washington law firm specializing in health law.
His recent experience includes matters involving managed care, Medicare reimbursement and coverage, antitrust laws, insurance regulations and physician-hospital integration.
Ansley is president of Samuel Shapiro & Co.
William S. Ansley Jr. has become president and chief operating officer of Samuel Shapiro & Co. customs broker and freight forwarding company.
He was chief executive of W.G. Carroll and Co. until it was bought by McGraw Hill in 1989. He then served as president of the Carroll Division, a family-owned customs and freight forwarding business, and was most recently vice president of Tower Group International's southeastern region in Atlanta.
Samuel Shapiro & Co., an 80-year-old company with headquarters in Baltimore, has five offices in the mid-Atlantic region.
Mr. Ansley will operate out of Atlanta, said M. Sigmund Shapiro, the company's chairman and CEO.
Bank executive elected to insurer's board
Susan C. Keating, an executive with NationsBank, has been elected to the board of directors of the Baltimore Life Insurance Co., based in Owings Mills.
Ms. Keating serves as senior banking executive for Maryland and senior banking executive for consumer banking for NationsBank in the mid-Atlantic region.
She was one of seven women recently honored by Business and Professional Woman/USA. She serves on the Governor's Economic Development Commission and is on the boards of the Empower Baltimore Management Corp., Union Memorial Hospital, University of Maryland's Shock Trauma Center and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Weeks named to board of nonprofit agency
S. Nelson Weeks, a partner in the business and finance department of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, has been appointed to the board of the Maryland Associates for Dyslexic Adults and Youth Inc., a nonprofit agency serving low- and moderate-income people with dyslexia.
Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, which employs 270 lawyers, has offices in Baltimore, Washington, Canden, N.J., Denver, Philadelphia and Salt Lake City.
Journal ranks UM faculty for research productivity
The logistics and transportation faculty at University of Maryland's College of Business and Management in College Park has been ranked first in research productivity in a study by Transportation Journal.
To measure productivity, Transportation Journal looked at the number of articles published by faculty in relevant academic journals. From 1986 to 1991 -- the evaluation period -- the logistics and transportation faculty had 73 articles.
The field of logistics management studies the flow of goods from a company's suppliers through its facilities to its customers and concentrates on such things as inventory control, warehousing, order processing, packaging and customer service.
DelCarmen to head hospital's medical staff
Benjamin V. DelCarmen has been elected to a two-year term as president of the medical staff at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. Dr. DelCarmen also will serve as chairman of the center's Medical Executive committee and member of the board of trustees.
Dr. DelCarmen, who has been affiliated with St. Joseph for 30 years, is board certified in general surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

* Bonnie Heneson Communications Inc., a public relations and advertising firm in Owings Mills, will provide marketing communications services for Advanced Radiology Inc., a regional practice with 52 physicians and 27 offices in Baltimore City and ++ Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll and Harford counties.
* Freed and Associates, based in Baltimore, will provide communications services to CURE Services, a division of United Health Care Inc., based in Baltimore. Freed and Associates was also named recently as agency of record for Precision Tune franchises in Dade and Broward counties in South Florida.
