On the field: In the top of...

On the field: In the top of the second, Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken dueled with Minnesota starter Kevin Tapani. On a 2-2 count, Ripken fouled off a pitch. Fouled off another. And another. And another . . . In all, Ripken fouled off seven pitches before grounding to shortstop. He may have helped to wear down Tapani, who threw 28 pitches in the inning -- including one that Andy Van Slyke hit for a two-run homer.

In the dugout: Orioles manager Phil Regan, true to his word, removed starter Ben McDonald after five innings. But the relatively short starts by Mike Mussina and McDonald already is draining the bullpen. Relievers Brad Pennington, Alan Mills and Armando Benitez each appeared for the second consecutive game. The Orioles may have to think about calling up another pitcher from Triple-A to absorb innings, right-hander Frank Seminara being the most likely candidate.

In the clubhouse: Regan on whether Sherman Obando's error in the season opener would discourage him from using him in the field: "No. I think that was just something that happens in the outfield after a short spring. Andy [Van Slyke] had only worked in the outfield for four or five days."
