Hobbit's Glen Golf Club and Columbia Country Club won their respective Baltimore and Washington area titles yesterday and will play for the annual team championship of the Maryland State Golf Association Saturday.
Hobbit's Glen, which won the Washington division and Maryland State team championship a year ago, easily won five of the six pairings and whipped Naval Academy GC, 14-4, to return to the state final. Columbia, buoyed by a pair of 3-0 decisions, got past Argyle CC, 11 1/2 -6 1/2 .
Hobbit's Glen had three 3-0 wins, two of them at home by Mike Panos-Jay Stosz and Bruce Shaver-Jim Bennett. In the other one at the Columbia course, Doug Wilson-Dan McCrone halved the front nine with Bill Palko-Jerry Watts, then combined to birdie the first four holes on the back nine for a 2 1/2 - 1/2 victory.
Although the winners are veterans of the championship round, these were the best showings by the Naval Academy and Argyle recently.
At the Naval Academy course, Phil Fairbanks-Fran Lynch won the front side from Bill Hanna-Mike Cumberpatch, 1 up, and Fairbanks birdied the 13th and 14th holes en route to a 3-0 win. Billy Carter-Wayne Wright halved the front nine with Nick Aquilino-Joe Lefavor, lost the 10th, won the 11th and 12th (all three won with birdies) and halved the rest for a 2 1/2 - 1/2 triumph.
Assistant professional Sam DiPhilippo and amateur Brian Koslosky provided Navy with a brief moment of glory in the leadoff spot at home. After halving the first hole, they won five holes in a row, four with birdies, and went on to defeat Gene Ward-Adrian Druzgala, 3-0. For the round, DiPhilippo and Koslosky each had five birdies and they were a combined 7-under par for the necessary holes.
For the winning Columbia team, Glenn Mitchell-Dan McAndrew stopped Jim Bonifant-Paul Carey at Columbia, 3-0, and Richard Holland-Dan DeRisio beat Stu Strang-Ken Tredway at Argyle, 3-0.
