Two players who were defensive backs for Navy a year ago gave some indication that they were beginning to grasp the quarterback responsibilities of the Midshipmen's new offense during a scrimmage yesterday morning at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.
Sophomore Chris McCoy, an option quarterback at Randolph/Clay High School in Cuthbert, Ga., was a defensive back on the Navy plebe/junior varsity team a year ago. Yesterday, he gained 83 yards on 12 carries and scored on a 70-yard run. He also completed six of 11 passes for 35 yards.
Junior Howard Bryant was the quarterback on the state championship team at Lakeside High School in Atlanta in 1991 and lettered as a defensive back for the Midshipmen a year ago. He rushed for 28 yards on 21 carries and completed three of six passes for 17 yards in the scrimmage.
Junior Omar Nelson of Silver Spring led the running backs with 56 yards on 12 carries and sophomore wingback Patrick McGrew of Silas, Ala., had 33 yards on just two carries.
Two newcomers were the top receivers.
Sophomore LeBron Butts of San Diego made three catches for 21 yards, and senior Shaun Stephenson of Bountiful, Utah, who lettered on Navy's lightweight football team the past two years, had a pair of catches for 13 yards.
