Crowley tapped by Arthur Anderson
William J. Crowley has been named managing partner of the Baltimore office of Arthur Andersen & Co., succeeding James T. Brady who was appointed by Gov. Parris Glendening to head the state's economic development efforts.
Mr. Brady became secretary of the newly named Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, formerly the Department of Economic and Employment Development, Monday.
Mr. Crowley, who transferred to the Baltimore office in 1986, was partner-in-charge of the Audit and Business Advisory Service practice before being named managing partner.
He serves on the board of Harbor Hospital Foundation, the University of Baltimore Merrick School of Business Accounting Advisory Board, UMBC President's Council on Continuing Education and Business Outreach and as treasurer of the Junior Achievement of Central Maryland.
After receiving bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from Michigan State University, he spent two years as an Army finance officer.
Mr. Crowley joined the Detroit office of Arthur Anderson in 1970 and became a partner in 1980. Kris W. Baldock has been named president and chief executive officer of Baltimore-based FutureCare Health and Management Co., which specializes in nursing home and long-term care for the elderly. He had served as the company's chief operating officer.
Before joining FutureCare in 1993, Mr. Baldock was vice president of Meridian Healthcare Inc. in Towson. While with Meridian, Mr. Baldock was responsible for operating five nursing centers and opened two new retirement communities.
Mr. Baldock, who received a bachelor's degree in business management from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., serves on the board of directors of the Health Facilities Association of Maryland. M. Hirsh Goldberg, Michael C. Hodes and Douglas A. Strouse have joined forces to form Goldberg Hodes Strouse Communications, a public relations and advertising agency in Towson.
Mr. Goldberg, who will serve as president and CEO, previously headed his own agency in Pikesville.
Mr. Goldberg has served as press secretary to former Gov. Harry Hughes and former Baltimore Mayor Theodore R. McKeldin and was advertising manager for the Rouse Co. during the early development of Columbia.
He is the author of five books, including the Complete Book of Greed: The Strange and Amazing Story of Human Excess, published in 1994.
Mr. Hodes, who founded the law firm Hodes, Ulman, Pessin & Katz, will serve as consultant to the new agency on media development and professional services marketing. Mr. Hodes, a part-owner of three radio stations, serves as president of the Advertising and Professional Club of Baltimore and is a member of the Foundation Board of Maryland Public Television. He is a former trustee of the State of Maryland Retirement System.
Mr. Strouse, president of the Baltimore-based litigation support firm Betz & Strouse, will provide new business development and management expertise.
Mr. Strouse serves on 12 corporate advisory boards and the College of Notre Dame's Board of Trustees. He also is the president of the CEO Club of Baltimore.
Firm acquires portion of Australian company
Corporate Express Inc., a national contract stationer with regional headquarters in Baltimore, announced an agreement to acquire a 52.7 percent interest in Australia's largest contract stationer, Macquarie Office Limited in Sydney.
The agreement requires Corporate Express to pay $16.9 million for more than 32 million newly issued shares of Macquarie. The investment, expected to close by the end of April, is subject to Macquarie's shareholders' and Australian regulatory approval.
Corporate Express, founded in 1986 in Boulder, Co., operates in more than 85 locations, including 21 regional warehouses, and employs 3,700 people.
The Mid-Atlantic Division employs 300 people from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, with 200 in Howard County.
Blumer joining Urban Land Institute
John P. Blumer, executive vice president and CEO at KLNB Inc., has been accepted as a full member of the Urban Land Institute, a nonprofit research and education organization that deals with land use issues.
The institute, which attempts to enhance the environment through appropriate land use, is supported by 13,000 members from the real estate industry.
Mr. Blumer brings 15 years of experience in real estate to the institute, as well as a master's degree in real estate from Johns Hopkins University.
KLNB Inc., with offices in Columbia and Towson, offers sales and leasing, property management, consulting and business real estate investment services.
Catterton Printing wins creativity prize
Catterton Printing of Waldorf, Md., received an award for outstanding creativity from the 37th Golden Pyramid competition, sponsored by Promotional Products Association International, an industry trade association.
The company, which specializes in direct mail production, received a Silver Pyramid award for a marketing program using promotional coupons for items such as Teddy bears with custom-printed T-shirts and imprinted canteen coolers.
