Guilty plea gets man 8 years for break-ins
A Baltimore man, who was arrested with a burglary suspect who hanged himself in a cell at Westminster state police barracks last year, was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to burglary-related charges this week.
William H. McFadden Jr., 47, of the 2600 block of W. Belvedere Ave. pleaded guilty to attempted daytime housebreaking and misdemeanor theft in the attempted break-ins of several Carroll County homes.
McFadden and Daniel Ray Marsh, 43, of Glen Burnie were arrested in September and charged with the break-ins of two houses, while prosecutors later charged McFadden with breaking into four dwellings in the Marriottsville and Mount Airy areas between July and September. Mr. Marsh used his belt to hang himself about four hours after the arrests.
As part of the plea deal, prosecutors dropped more than a dozen other charges against McFadden. Circuit Judge Francis M. Arnold imposed a 10-year sentence, but suspended two years of the term. He also ordered McFadden to serve five years of ZTC supervised probation when he is released.
Construction set on Pennsylvania Ave.
The State Highway Administration will improve Pennsylvania Avenue in Westminster beginning in late April. The project will cover about a half-mile along Pennsylvania Avenue from Union Street to Route 140. Work includes rebuilding the roadway between Union Street and Sullivan Avenue to provide a new surface, drainage system, sidewalks, curbs and gutters.
The project also will include resurfacing Pennsylvania Avenue from Sullivan Avenue to Route 140.
To expedite construction, Pennsylvania Avenue will close Monday from Union Street to Sullivan Avenue. Signs will direct motorists to use Route 140, Center Street or Main Street as detour routes.
Single lane closures will occur during off-peak hours between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. along Pennsylvania Avenue between Sullivan Avenue and Route 140.
The project is expected to be complete by fall.
