Edward J. O'Hearn, a retired civilian personnel officer at Fort Detrick, died Monday of cancer at his home in Ijamsville. He was 61.

Mr. O'Hearn retired in October from the Army post in Frederick, where he had worked since 1972. A civilian employee of the Army for 36 years, he previously worked at Edgewood Arsenal and the Pentagon.

Born in Ashland, Pa., he served in the Army for two years in the 1950s and graduated from Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg.

A Mass of Christian burial was to be offered at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Ashland.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, the former Leonice Watts; a daughter, Bonnie O'Hearn of Centreville, Va., a son, Edward J. O'Hearn Jr. of Ijamsville; four brothers, Richard O'Hearn of Edgewater Park, N.J., Vincent O'Hearn Jr. of Lancaster, Pa., James O'Hearn of Houston and Eugene O'Hearn of Ashland; and two sisters, Marianna O'Hearn of Ashland and Susan Bovidge of Dauphin, Pa.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Frederick.
