Bell Atlantic Corp. will close the last two bill payment centers it operates in Maryland, one downtown and the other at Mondawmin Mall, the company announced yesterday.
The two centers will be replaced by 20 banks, stores and other institutions around the city that will collect phone bill payments under contract with the company, Bell Atlantic spokesman Dave Pacholczyk said. The company intends to locate one of those centers in Mondawmin Mall, he said.
Mr. Pacholczyk said the Baltimore closings, which will eliminate 25 jobs, are part of a broader reduction of 5,600 positions announced last year.
The Baltimore closings were matched by similar closings in other cities, he said.
While most customers pay their bills by mail, the two centers were heavily used, Mr. Pacholczyk said. The downtown center is 320 St. Paul St.
