Boston University -- Announced that West Potomac basketball G Billy Beal signed a national letter of intent.

NHL -- Suspended Dallas Stars RW Shane Churla for four games after he resisted a linesman and got involved in a secondary altercation Sunday. Named Detroit Red Wings D Paul Coffey Player of the Week.

Buffalo Sabres -- Signed C Brian Holzinger to a three-year contract.

Detroit Red Wings -- Announced that Sid Abel, who centered the club's fabled Production Line with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay on the wings, will have his No. 12 retired April 28.

Montreal Canadiens -- Sent RW Chris Murray to AHL Fredericton.

St. Louis Blues -- Recalled G Geoff Sargent on an emergency basis from IHL Peoria.

Washington Capitals -- Signed LW Alexander Kharlamov to a three-year contract. Signed LW Richard Zednik to a two-year contract. Signed D Alexandre Alexeev to a one-year contract.

IHL -- Named Denver Grizzlies G Tommy Salo, now with the New York Islanders, Most Valuable Player after he posted a 2.60 goals-against average.
