The Volunteers: The Rev. Warren Ebinger of Severna Park United Methodist Church, The Rev. Gene Nichols of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Glen Burnie and Rev. Olin Herndon of Glen Burnie United Methodist Church are part of the approximately 21-member Pastoral Care Program at North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie.
The three men led a Holy Week service for staff at the hospital chapel on Thursday and distributed Holy Communion to patients afterward.
About the program: The three clergymen worked with hospital ** employees Gail Dym, department of volunteer services coordinator, and Susan Ward, vice president of operations, to create the Pastoral Care Program.
The program assures patients and staff access to a member of the clergy, who in addition to visiting parishioners, patients and their families, take turns being on-call for a 24-hour period at least once a month.
Volunteers' comments: "The group reflects all the various denominations. Having an organized group like this assures that someone is always available if needed," said Father Nichols.
"I think we're seeing some new opportunities for us as pastors . . . it's a team ministry of healing," said Mr. Ebinger.
"In some ways the spiritual aspects of medicine, a sort of holistic approach . . . needs to keep up with other advances in medicine, and having a program like this is a part of making that happen," said Mr. Herndon.
