Like most people involved in motor sports, Robert "Bones" Harvey has made auto racing a part of his life since he was a teen-ager.
Starting as an errand boy on his brother Tim's car, Harvey has done everything there is to do in late-model racing. He has built cars, raced and owned them.
The 44-year-old Finksburg native started in racing 30 years ago when modified Ford coupes ruled the local race scene.
He raced several years for himself and for Mike Woolford of Westminster, picking up two feature wins in the mid-70s at Lincoln and Potomac speedways.
He drove for several car owners before switching to car owner himself. Eventually he formed the Glen Falls Racing Team, and he has had about four drivers over the past 10 years drive for him.
Although Harvey has been more involved as an owner the past several years, he hasn't lost his desire to climb behind the wheel.
"I still miss it," said Harvey. "I am afraid I might get back in though and it takes a lot of money to do everything. It is hard to do it without sponsor money.
"I am happy, though. I just enjoy being around racing whether I am just helping, driving, or own the car."
When Harvey has not been involved with his own car, his mechanical talents have been in demand by other drivers and owners. And when Harvey lends his expertise, he not only brings along a wealth of personal knowledge, but a group of experienced guys that are part of his old Glen Falls Racing team.
Late-model racing on the local scene requires a good car and driver plus a crew with different experience. But before that can all work together to make a winning team, they have to be able to get along and communicate with one another. And that's where Harvey makes it work.
Harvey is well-liked and knows the sport. His knowledge is always welcomed by other teams. Last year Harvey worked with Ray Kable Jr., a second-generation driver from Owings Mills. Kable owns and races his own car, but needed some help, so he had Harvey assist him. It was a brief, but good, relationship where both parties learned from each other.
"I learned a lot from Kable," said Harvey. "He is an intelligent person and knows a lot about racing."
In the past couple of seasons, Harvey has been talking with Paul Crowl, a late-model driver from Upperco, about working together.
"We have been talking for some time," said Harvey. "I've known Paul for some time and we decided to get together this year. Paul has two cars and we keep one of them at my house. Paul is a good driver and has good equipment. I think he will do a good job this year. I feel that I am involved with some good people."
Harvey gets together with the rest of the team twice a week to work on the car unless damage is done over the weekend, then they will put in some extra hours. On the other nights, Harvey works on the backup car at his house. He also is working on a 421 cubic-inch Chevrolet motor that will be used in the car.
Crowl, with Harvey behind him, plans on racing weekly at Hagerstown Speedway, a half-mile clay oval that is known for having the toughest late-model competition of any weekly track.
Cris Eash of Woodbine moved from his ninth starting spot to sixth by the second lap and then worked his way to third by the halfway mark. Eash took over second on the 20th lap, took the lead on the next lap and held on to become the first repeat super sprint winner at the Lincoln Speedway last week. Jesse Wentz of Manchester was seventh. Randy Zechman of Westminster was sixth in the semi-late feature and Greg Messersmith of Hampstead was fifth in the thundercar feature.
Darren Eash of Woodbine was fifth in the super-sprint car feature at Williams Grove Speedway. The World of Outlaws visited Memphis Motorsports Park in Tennessee for two nights. Jeff Shepard of Finksburg was 11th in time trials.
Eric Ohler of Westminster was second in the Sr. SS class in go-kart racing at Shippensburg Kartway.
At Trail-Way Speedway, Brad McClelland of Westminster was third and Jerry Parrish of Westminster ninth in the micro-sprint feature. John McDonogh of Finksburg was sixth in the eight-cylinder feature and Mark Shorb of Westminster was 10th. In the four-cylinder feature, Matt Barnes of Westminster was fourth, Mike Walls of Taneytown was fifth and Jeff Young of Westminster seventh. Randy Enos of Westminster was eighth in the street stock feature.
In drag racing, Rob McCraw of Sykesville won the motorcycle division at Mason-Dixon Dragway. Jim Peddicord of Westminster and Joe Mayne of Mount Airy both went three rounds in Class I at Capitol Dragway. At 75-80 Dragway, Tom Higgs of Sykesville went to the semifinals in Class I, Ed Talbert of Taneytown went to the semifinals in Class II. Don Kinna of Westminster won the Mustang 5.0 competition. The Jr. Dragster division was won by Erick Smith of Mount Airy.
